Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a viral infection that attacks the body's immune system. If untreated, HIV can progress to Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) which can have devastating results through opportunistic infections. We overview the pathophysiology of HIV and how it can be diagnosed and managed to avoid fatal infections.
