Asthma is a very common obstructive small airway disease. It is generally atopic in children but can also be aspirin induced in an adult population. Asthma causes narrowed airways which makes it harder for air to escape. We examine the pathophysiology of asthma in detail to provide the foundation for understanding the clinical presentation and formulating acute and long-term management strategies.
