Haematemesis, or vomiting blood, can be a symptom of an upper GI bleed. This should not be confused with haemoptysis, coughing up blood, which is more suggestive of respiratory causes. We suggest adopting an anatomical framework when thinking about the causes of haematemesis. Management principles include transfusion and controlling the bleeding source.
