Pleural effusions occur when fluid accumulates between the tissues that coat the lung and the chest. Pleural effusions can be broken down into exudate (“Dirty”) or transudate (more systemic) causes and can be distinguished using Light’s criteria. We also describe other appropriate investigations and management principles.
