Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory condition that occurs typically 2-4 weeks after a streptococcal infection. It is a type II hypersensitivity reaction whereby antibodies produced against streptococcus react with the patient’s organs to produce symptoms. Rheumatic heart disease occurs when these antibodies target the heart. We describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic approach and management principles for patients with rheumatic fever.
